Social Shopping

On line fashion retailing is changing the way the fashion industry is responding to consumers.

From Mashable 20/06/2011
"In an effort to drive deeper engagement between designers and those who purchase their clothes and accessories, a mix of established and lesser-known brands are now giving consumers opportunities to choose what gets produced and, in some cases, even what gets designed. The result is both a more engaged shopper and less waste as manufacturers and retailers are better able to estimate demand before garments are produced."

"Burberry is following the lead of startups such as Blank Label (pictured above) and Gemvara, which allow customers to choose between patterns, materials and other details in step-by-step web apps to create “one of a kind” apparel and accessories. Later this year, Burberry will let customers design their own trench coats."

Q1. What aspects of social networking are used?
Q2. What advantages has this over traditional shop retailing?
Q3. Does 'crowd sourcing' compromise 'artistic integrity'?

WOW this is really cool. Although it doesn't seem like it's a new concept from reading the comments. Perhaps Blank-label are more noticeable as they have an iPad app which is all the rage now. Perfect for on the go shopping allowing the consumer to have control of their own design. They are also on facebook, twitter and You tube though it's not that obvious on their website (right in the bottom right corner).
I believe this could well be the future of shopping as more people adopt shopping on-line whats more ideal then submitting your measurements on-line too to get the perfect fit instead of having to walk into a shop and try something on, then leaving or worse guessing, then finding the same online. No need with this concept!
does crowdsourcing compromise artistic integrity?...i don't think so, it's only a shirt, how could you go wrong and some designers do get it wrong (Kmart)...the red cross charity shop is full of them!
Plus this company still has control, as they only release a certain range of materials/ patterns which obviously would still have artistic integrity when mixed and matched...different story if Kmart did the same!

This type of online business is not new to me. I recently created a personalised travel mug on http://www.zazzle.com.au/personalized+mugs
Although I was amazed to see how many social networking they were using to promote their business. I started writing them down...but got over it after a few minutes. Some include: LinkedIn, StumbleOpon, Foursquare, reddit, GoogleNews, Google+, GoogleBuzz, YouTube, Flickr, facebook, Twitter & so on...crazy!!!
