Viral Advertising

This method of advertising is a popular way for organisations to promote themselves, their products or services. This can range from consumer products (Guinness) to self-parodies and political promotions.

The comments for this post are examples of viral advertising from students in the Graduate Certificate of Marketing at Holmesglen.

All very interesting and great examples of viral advertising! And one from me:

Q1. - How many views for each?
Q2. What are some common features of successful viral advertisments?

There are 2 advertisements. The first one is from Ikea, and I think they're just telling you it is really important to tidy up your room, or it may hurt your girlfriend. and the second one is from Pepsi, which has more and deeper meaning in it. They was trying to enter Chinese market, so they chose Famous Shou Lin kong fu and a western apprentice, then this western student passed the test and everyone accepted western culture(which is Pepsi). Whether Pepsi reach their goal or not, at least everyone knows that Pepsi is coming to China!

This is a viral ad by Volkswagen called “the piano stairs”. It was published at 2009 at was viewed by more then 10 million people on-line.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2lXh2n0aPyw

The Volkswagen ad is so effect because it uses un-direct marketing and also gives u a good perspective about life, how easy it is to change people’s behaviour for the better and make them feel happy and good about it in the process. This is a message that everyone can relate to, worldwide and that is was makes it so efficient.

This is an example of viral advertising, Heineken which can communicate about alcohol drink to anyone who like to drink very well. The important point, if you drink so much, you should not drive. Of cause, the accident can happen to you. In addition, other people would be in danger because of you. Anyway, that is why Heineken is an effective viral advertising.

This is a Pantene advertisement. Which emotionally touching the feeling of the audiences. Although it is almost not relevent to the Pantene haircare product but it can be useful in viral marketing. People will surely discuss among themselves throughout this ads.

Viral advertising, almost by definition, is distributed via individuals and word-of-mouth (or word-of-fingers, for the Internet).

So, a successful viral advertisement must make people want to share it with their friends.

People will share such a thing if they think, by doing so, they will gain personally. For example:

Popularity - sharing the ad will make people like you more.

Attractiveness - sharing the ad will make you appear smarter, wittier, sexier, more clued-in, etc.

Helpfulness - sharing the ad will make you appear helpful. I.e. the recipients appreciate the sharing - either because it's relevant or it's enjoyable.

Safety - SEND THIS TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW OR ELSE YOUR MOTHER WILL DIE.

Other generic human desires (such as food, wealth, problem-solving, self-actualisation, etc) are also possible, but mroe difficult, to take advantage of.

This ad is very effective in the way it was shot, with close ups of the Gorilla showing emotion on it's face, as it reacts to the music. This song is very eerily and certainly stirs up emotion. i don't remember when it was on TV if it showed it was cabury at the start because if it didn't it pulls you in with it's usual advertising. what a Gorillas has to do with chocolate? i'm still trying to figure it out.

With 8,839,048 viewers with 19,793 likes & only 278 dislikes...this YouTube clip is an effective viral ad because it used common names...such as Alan & Steve & humor.

In offices all over the world, people are still amused when an Alan calls!
