Save the Net Campaign

GetUp is a political lobby group that uses the internet to communicate with its members to define campaigns and also uses the internet to promote its campaigns.

GetUp has collected signatures for petitions and also money to make TV and printed media ads.  It has now launched an internet advertising campaign.  Below is the ad and a link to how it appears on a web site that is hosting the ad.

GetUp is an independent, not-for-profit community campaigning group. We use new technology to empower Australians to have their say on important national issues. We receive no political party or government funding, and every campaign we run is entirely supported by voluntary donations.

Q1. What is the cost of such a campaign?
Q2. What demographic would it appeal to?
Q3. Is this ethical?

Internet campaigns and internet lobby groups will become more widespread and become a mainstream component of political life very soon if not already. The cost of a campaign like this, and let us be honest here, the campaign is not about the issue its all about fundraising, would be very reasonable. It would be difficult to estimate but if Getup actually has 330000 members this internet campaign would cost a fraction of TV or print advertising, particularly when it is so precisely targeted.
Demographically it is aimed at younger tech savvy people. The result of the last Australian Federal election emnphasised the importance of this group. To win government parties need to have a majority of this demographic on board, a increasingly demographic at that.
Is Getup ethical? Getup is a political lobby group, pushing left wing or progressive causes. As with any lobby group it must disclose where their political ties lie and if any donations are made to political parties. I would hope that prospective members of Getup understand that Getup has many agendas and may not be all that it seems.
